We are thrilled to introduce the Penquis Youth Hockey Learn to Skate Program led by Coach Tanya Quigley!
Youth ages 4-12 wanting to join Learn to Skate are required to be able to consistently do the following:
- Standing from the ice without assistance
THAT'S IT! We will do the rest to mold your little skater into the hockey player they want to become!
Cubs on Ice: These introductory classes, divided into four progressive levels, allow children with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning the basic skills of skating. Children ages 4-6 will develop the ABS’s of movement - Agility, Balance, Coordination, and Speed - which are essential for developing fundamental movement skills. 30 minutes of instruction.
Panther Basics: Teaching the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation hockey skating. Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. Upon completion of the Basic Skills Levels 1-6, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating. 45 minutes of instruction.
Edgy Panthers: Designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating, the four badge levels, plus power skating, will teach skaters how to be more proficient and agile on the ice. Proper techniques for the game of hockey are the primary focus and all elements are taught without a puck. Skaters will learn the basic hockey stance, stride, knee bend, and other necessary fundamentals to be successful. 45 Minute of instruction.
With every sport, the first skills to be established are the fundamentals, and the very basis of a good hockey player is a good skater. Hockey is such a unique sport, requiring players to be multi-talented in this way. As players wish to join Learn to Play, they are encouraged to continue participating in Learn to Skate to advance their skating, as developing this foundation as early as possible is important.
